Blaster / Welchia type viruses
Official Microsoft fixes for Windows NT, Win2000 and XP to prevent Blaster style viruses from infecting a PC are available below along with virus removal tools from Symantec.
Windows 95, 98, and ME are not vulnerable to this specific virus type and do not need to be fixed or to be scanned for Blaster or Welchia virus types.
Step 1.
The first step is to fix your PC so Blaster type viruses can't get in.
The following files are official Microsoft fixes for Windows NT, Win2000 and XP to prevent Blaster style viruses from infecting a PC. Select the fix for your version of windows by clicking on the link. A file will be downloaded to your PC - remember where you download it to on your PC. Once downloaded, you should go to the folder you downloaded the fix to, and click on the file name. Answer "yes" or "I agree" whenever asked and when it's done, shut down your PC and restart.
Windows 2000 Considerations
The Windows 2000 fixes require Service Pack 2 or higher to be installed in order for the fix to work. You can download service packs from the Microsoft website.
If you run Windows 2000 and also run the IIS webserver, Welchia can infect your PC unless you also install a second patch from MS (WebDav (ntdll.dll) Buffer Overflow Vulnerability). Again, this is for Win2000 PC's only, with a webserver running.
Step 2.
After you have fixed your PC as described in step 1, you need to download and run a tool to check your PC for infection by a Blaster or Welchia virus. If found, these tools will remove the virus.
Download and run one or more of the following removal tools provided by Symantec (Norton Anti-Virus). As before, click on the link, download the file and remember what folder you save it to. Go to the folder and click on the file to run the tool.
You must run the fix in step 1 and reboot before running the removal tools
