In 2009, all over-the-air television broadcasting stations will transition to digital broadcasting as required by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and Congress. This is called the 2009 DTV Transition. New! The deadline for all broadcasters to make the switch has been extended to June 12, 2009. Changing over to a digital format will reduce the amount of signal spectrum the nation's TV broadcasting system uses, allowing the extra capacity to be used by emergency first-responders, like our local fire and police departments. In addition, for the viewer, digital television (DTV) allows TV stations to offer clearer pictures and better sound quality.
